Purpose of Local Architecture

LESSON NOTE ON CCA (Grade 5)

TOPIC: Purpose of Local Architecture
DATE: Monday 19th May – Friday 23rd May

NOTE

Local Architecture is the traditional method of building houses using materials found in the environment. These buildings are common in villages and reflect the lifestyle, culture, and climate of the people.

Examples of local building materials include:

  • Mud
  • Wood
  • Palm fronds
  • Thatch
  • Bamboo

Purposes of Local Architecture:

  1. Protection – from sun, rain, and wind.
  2. Comfort – houses are often cool inside during hot weather.
  3. Cultural identity – building designs show the traditions of the people.
  4. Community living – traditional houses are often built close together to support family unity.
  5. Easy maintenance – local materials are cheap and easy to repair or replace.
