LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
1. Identify shapes that are spherical in shape.
2. Describe the Earth as a sphere.
3. Calculate the volume of cuboids.
4. Show that the volume of the globe is less than the volume of the cuboids enclosing it.
5. Solve problems on volume of spheres and cuboids.
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:
The pupils are familiar with basic geometric shapes and have previously learned about multiplication and measurement.

LESSON DEVELOPMENT
INTRODUCTION:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:
The teacher introduces the topic by asking pupils if they have seen objects like footballs, globes, or oranges. The teacher displays these objects and asks learners to describe their shapes.
PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES:
Pupils observe and describe the objects presented by the teacher. They relate them to shapes they know.
LEARNING POINTS:
Understanding and identifying spherical shapes in real life.
PRESENTATION:
STEP I:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:
The teacher defines and lists examples of spherical shapes and explains their features.
PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES:
Pupils listen and list more examples of spherical objects they know.
LEARNING POINTS:
To identify and describe spherical objects.
STEP II:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:
The teacher explains that the Earth is a sphere and demonstrates using a globe and diagrams. The teacher draws a sphere and marks the poles and equator.
PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES:
Pupils observe the globe and the drawing on the board. They repeat after the teacher and note down key features.
LEARNING POINTS:
To describe Earth as a spherical object.
STEP III:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:
The teacher introduces the formula for the volume of a sphere: (4/3)πr³, and demonstrates using a sample radius.
PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES:
Pupils follow the calculation and solve one example on their own using a given radius.
LEARNING POINTS:
To calculate the volume of a sphere (globe).
STEP IV:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:
The teacher explains the formula for volume of a cuboid: l × w × h. He/she gives dimensions and guides pupils in solving it.
PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES:
Pupils solve volume of a cuboid and compare the result with the volume of the sphere.
LEARNING POINTS:
To understand how a sphere fits within a cuboid and how to compare volumes.
STEP V:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:
The teacher gives quantitative problems involving volume of spheres and cuboids. The teacher moves around guiding learners.
PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES:
Pupils solve the problems individually and in groups. They present their answers for correction.
